A Potential Return to MMA for Matt Riddle in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle may be eyeing a return to mixed martial arts competition. Riddle, who is 37 years old, has sparked conversations about stepping back into the MMA ring or cage as early as 2024.
Despite not revealing specifics, Riddle has confirmed discussions with various combat sports organizations. His talks have been substantial enough to attract media attention, with the Wrestling Observer Newsletter hinting at potential offers from bare-knuckle fighting entities and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
Riddle's history in MMA is notable; his last official bout took place in February 2014 against Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Before transitioning to professional wrestling, he had an impressive run in the UFC, exiting the promotion on a four-win streak after a victory over Che Mills in 2013. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which also led to public criticism from UFC President Dana White.
Now a free agent, Riddle has enjoyed a successful career in professional wrestling. After beginning his training in 2014, he made his debut in 2015. He quickly became a prominent figure on the independent circuit, capturing several titles along the way. His skills and charisma led him to WWE NXT in 2018, where he secured the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne.
His momentum continued as he ascended to WWE's main roster, winning the United States Championship in February 2021. Additionally, Riddle formed the popular tag team "RK-Bro" with veteran wrestler Randy Orton, with whom he won the Raw Tag Team Championship twice. Despite his wrestling commitments, Riddle has maintained his martial arts regimen, practicing multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu—a testament to his combat sports pedigree.
The athlete was recently spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, further fueling speculation about his return to fighting.
Riddle Reflects on His Journey and Future
In an interview with MMA Junkie, Riddle opened up about the ongoing negotiations. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he said. With a cautious approach to his announcement, he added, "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."
Riddle also reflected on his departure from the UFC and how it impacted his career trajectory. "I have to thank Dana because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle remarked. White's public criticism, while harsh, inadvertently contributed to Riddle's notoriety and relatability among fans, helping to shape his 'bro' persona that has become a staple of his wrestling character.
When discussing past grievances and the possibility of re-entering the UFC, Riddle expressed a pragmatic outlook. "I never say never," he stated, indicating a willingness to move beyond previous conflicts. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge."
Riddle also looked back fondly on his seamless transition from MMA to professional wrestling. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he said. His success in the squared circle hasn't diminished his passion for combat sports, nor his desire to test himself. "Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?" Riddle mused about his future.
As the MMA community and wrestling fans alike await official news, Riddle's potential return to MMA continues to generate buzz. Whether he steps back into the cage or continues to entertain in the wrestling ring, his competitive spirit remains undiminished. With a return to MMA on the horizon, Matt Riddle could once again make waves in the world of combat sports.
