NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau Remembered in Memorial Service

Friends, family, and the broader NHL community came together on Monday to honor the life of star forward Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically lost his life in a cycling accident last month. The memorial service, held with deep reverence, saw attendance from numerous teammates from the Columbus Blue Jackets, as well as NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

A Shocking Accident

Johnny Gaudreau, aged 31, and his brother Matthew were struck by a drunk driver during a bicycle ride in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, a ride meant to be a relaxing diversion prior to their sister's wedding, where they were both set to serve as groomsmen. Both brothers, revered for their skills on the ice and loved for their warmth off of it, succumbed to their injuries. The driver involved was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto.

A Growing Family

During her poignant eulogy, Meredith Gaudreau shared a heart-wrenching yet hopeful revelation: she is nine weeks pregnant with their third child. "We're actually a family of five. I'm in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby. A total surprise, but again, John was beaming and so excited," she revealed, her voice filled with both love and sorrow.

The couple's growing family already includes two young children—Noa Harper Gaudreau, born on September 30, 2022, and Johnny Edward Gaudreau, born on February 22, 2024. Reflecting on the moment she told Johnny about the newest addition, Meredith noted, "I was so nervous because this was, again, a total surprise. But his reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me even though I was driving the car. After the initial excitement sank in, every time he looked at me, he would say, 'You're nuts, you know that? Three kids?'"

Memories Cherished

To those who knew him, Johnny Gaudreau was much more than an NHL star. He was a devoted family man, a loving husband, and a beacon of joy. Meredith summarized these sentiments beautifully during her eulogy, describing the last months they spent as a family of four. "John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life."

She went on to talk about a particularly special week they shared, a memory she holds dear. "There's specifically one week that I will cherish forever—it will be my favorite week of my life out of those six months," she said, her words resonating deeply with those present.

A Community Mourns

The loss of the Gaudreau brothers has left an indelible mark on the hockey community. Known for his lightning-fast plays and impeccable skills, Johnny Gaudreau was a standout on the ice. Off the rink, his charisma and infectious smile made him a beloved figure among fans and peers alike.

Commissioner Gary Bettman also paid his respects, highlighting Johnny's contributions to the league and the void his passing leaves. Teammates from the Columbus Blue Jackets, too, mourned deeply, standing in solidarity with Johnny’s family during this unimaginable time.

A Shared Grief

The tragedy has also cast a shadow over the family of Matthew Gaudreau. Matthew’s wife, Madeline, is expecting their first child, adding another layer of heartache to an already devastating situation. The close-knit Gaudreau family now faces the dual challenge of coming to terms with their loss while preparing to welcome new life into the world.

The brothers' presence in New Jersey, initially meant to celebrate their sister’s wedding, underscores the fragility of life and the arbitrary nature of fate. Their absence at the family gathering, where they were to play significant roles, makes the grief even more poignant.

The community will undoubtedly continue to rally around both Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau as they navigate the challenging days ahead. As the hockey world reflects on the legacies of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, their stories serve as stark reminders of both the joy and unpredictability of life.
