In a season already filled with thrilling plays and dramatic twists, the NFL world has turned its attention to the unfolding narrative between Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores.
Tagovailoa’s Candid Critique
Recently, Tagovailoa's criticism of Flores has become a focal point. The quarterback opened up about the psychological toll of Flores’ leadership style. “To put it in the simplest terms, if you woke up every morning and I told you that you suck at what you did, that you don't belong doing what you do, that you shouldn't be here, that this guy should be here, that you haven't earned this. And then you have somebody else come in and tell you, 'Dude, you are the best fit for this. You're accurate. You're the best whatever, you're this, you're that.' How would it make you feel listening to one or the other?”
This candid revelation has cast a new light on the dynamics within the Dolphins' locker room during Flores' tenure. Flores, now a linebackers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, reflected on the situation, noting, “Look, I'm human. So that hit me in a way that wasn't positive for me. But at the same time, I've got to use that and say, 'Hey, how can I grow from that? How can I be better?'”
The Draft Debate
Tagovailoa entered the NFL with high expectations, being picked fifth overall by the Dolphins in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, whispers persisted that Flores had a preference for Justin Herbert, who was subsequently drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers. It was Dolphins GM Chris Grier who ultimately decided to draft Tagovailoa. The decision has been a point of contention, especially given Herbert's standout performances with the Chargers.
Tagovailoa’s journey with the Dolphins has been tumultuous. He didn't take any NFL snaps until a Week 6 matchup against the New York Jets in the 2020 season. By Week 8, he was starting against the Los Angeles Rams. However, his rookie season was marked by notable substitutions; Flores replaced Tagovailoa with veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick during crucial moments in games against the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.
A New Direction
The 2021 season further tested Tagovailoa with rumors of the Dolphins’ interest in trading for Deshaun Watson. The speculation added to the uncertainty surrounding his position as Miami’s franchise quarterback. Flores' tenure came to an end in January 2022 after guiding the team to a 9-8 season.
Following Flores' departure, the Dolphins appointed Mike McDaniel as the new head coach. McDaniel's approach has provided a different type of support for Tagovailoa. In his introductory meeting with the quarterback, McDaniel expressed his confidence and commitment to helping Tagovailoa reach his potential. “We're gonna have an extensive professional relationship, my man. One thing I know about you is, you have the ambition to be great. My job is to coach you to get all that greatness out of you...”
Reaping the Rewards
It didn't take long for McDaniel’s influence to show results. Under his guidance, Tagovailoa led the NFL in passer rating in 2022 and passing yards in 2023, earning his first Pro Bowl nod. Reflecting on these achievements, Tagovailoa attributed much of his growth to the newfound support within the organization. “I think support for any of us as players means a lot. We understand that the NFL is a tough industry. It's tough to play because you're playing against the best every Sunday. But to be able to have support of the head coach, the head guy, that should tell you a lot.”
The Dolphins’ locker room has undergone significant changes, with positive impacts resonating among the players. Tagovailoa noted, “I just feel like there are so many things that have happened. There are a lot of changes, and a lot of good changes, I guess, with the people that we've picked up and the guys that we've acquired as well. The locker room feels different.”
As the NFL season continues, the Dolphins, under McDaniel’s leadership, look poised to make a substantial impact. Tagovailoa’s journey, fueled by overcoming past challenges and embracing present support, serves as a testament to resilience and growth in professional sports.
