In the heart of Texas, a new star is shining brightly for the Dallas Cowboys. Tyler Guyton, a first-round rookie left tackle, has quickly become a focal point of conversation at training camp. Drafted 29th overall, Guyton’s intelligence, confidence, and skill have left an indelible mark on the Cowboys' organization and fans alike.
Guyton's journey to the NFL began at the University of Oklahoma, where he started 13 of his 14 collegiate games at right tackle. However, it wasn’t long before the Cowboys saw his potential at the more demanding left tackle position. Transitioning positions is no small feat, yet Guyton has managed to do so with remarkable ease.
His rapid adaptation to the Cowboys’ system has been a testament to his football intelligence. Head coach Mike McCarthy praised Guyton’s performance, particularly his encounter with defensive phenom Micah Parsons. “I thought he had some nice reps against Micah,” said McCarthy, highlighting the rookie's impressive start.
Adding to the rookie's list of achievements, teammate and quarterback Dak Prescott shared an awe-inspiring moment from a team jeopardy night. “The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown to be honest with you,” Prescott remarked, showcasing Guyton's mental sharpness off the field as well.
The camaraderie between Guyton and his teammates has been equally noteworthy. Tyler Smith, the Cowboys' left guard, and a fellow Texan, has taken on a mentorship role. “He’s helped me out a lot. He’s like a big brother to me,” Guyton admitted. Smith reciprocated the admiration, praising Guyton's physical attributes and potential. “It’s not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes,” Smith noted. “The sky truly is the limit for him and his development.”
In addition to his impressive training camp performances, Guyton has also shown his lighter side. During a rookie karaoke session, he chose to perform “Mary Jane” by Rick James. “It’s a song that everybody knows is groovy and that would work,” Guyton explained, blending fun with confidence, much like his approach to football.
However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the rookie. Guyton faced an illness that forced him to miss three consecutive practices. Upon his return, he participated in a limited capacity, showing dedication to regaining his form. “I’m feeling better, for sure. I’m just under the weather, working my way back now,” Guyton commented, highlighting his resilience and commitment to the team.
The upcoming joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams will be another opportunity for Guyton to showcase his burgeoning talent. Micah Parsons, who Guyton once stonewalled during padded practice, acknowledges the mutual benefits of their rivalry. “Of course it did. We’re both getting each other better… Going up against him, even losing, helps me out,” Parsons reflected, indicating the competitive yet supportive environment within the team.
With lofty expectations, Guyton is stepping into the sizable shoes of his predecessor, Tyron Smith. Yet, as Dak Prescott wisely advised, “He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn’t really matter who played here before him… At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself.” This mindset seems to be serving Guyton well as he carves out his own legacy with the Cowboys.
As the season approaches, the Dallas Cowboys and their fans eagerly anticipate the potential impact of Tyler Guyton on their offensive line. His combination of intelligence, physical prowess, and unwavering confidence paints a promising picture for the future. While the road ahead is long, if Guyton’s early performances are any indication, the Cowboys may have found a cornerstone for their line for years to come.
