Mekhi Becton Joins Philadelphia Eagles, Impresses Early in Training Camp

The Philadelphia Eagles have added a significant piece to their offensive line, signing versatile tackle Mekhi Becton. Initially brought in to serve as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton's arrival comes at a critical time for the Eagles. Tyler Steen's recent ankle injury has left a vacancy at the starting right guard position, and Becton has already begun to prove his worth.

Becton Steps Up Amid Injuries

During his first practice with the first team, Becton lined up as the right guard and demonstrated his capabilities by neutralizing defensive lineman Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. Despite not participating in the initial days of training camp, Becton stayed engaged on the sidelines, learning from his teammates and preparing for his moment to step up.

"I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," stated Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, highlighting the promising start Becton has made under challenging circumstances.

Valuable Versatility

Becton's ability to adapt and play multiple positions along the offensive line is not going unnoticed. Left guard Landon Dickerson commended Becton's performance and his flexibility, stating, "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?"

The value of having a player like Becton, who can swing between various positions, cannot be understated. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," Dickerson added.

A Mindset of Readiness

Becton's readiness to seize opportunities and his understanding of his role within the team are evident in his approach. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton remarked, reflecting on his initial days at the camp.

Regardless of whether he starts or serves as a backup, Becton's commitment remains unwavering. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton asserted.

Impact on the Offensive Line

The Eagles have yet to reveal how long Tyler Steen will be out, but in the interim, Becton's presence adds valuable depth and flexibility to the offensive line. Even as a component of the second-team offensive line, his role is critical to the team’s overall performance and preparedness.

As Becton continues to integrate into the Eagles' offensive system, his capability to handle multiple roles and his professional attitude keep him as a considerable asset. Whether neutralizing top defensive threats in practice or supporting teammates from the sideline, Becton's contributions are already shaping the dynamic of the Eagles' offensive front.

The Eagles and their fans will be keenly watching how Mekhi Becton’s journey with the team unfolds, especially as the regular season approaches and the true tests begin.
