The Dallas Cowboys are making strategic moves to bolster their roster as they head into the latter part of the season. Earlier this week, the team secured a significant addition by signing four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook. Cook, known for his impressive tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, where he became the third-leading rusher with 5,993 yards, will initially join the practice squad to acclimate to the Cowboys' system.
Despite an uncharacteristic 2023 season that saw Cook playing for both the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens, his career statistics remain formidable. Since 2019, Cook has amassed 5,238 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, consistently surpassing 1,135 rushing yards in each of his Pro Bowl seasons from 2019 to 2022. His recent numbers include 214 rushing yards on 67 carries during the 2023 regular season.
Strategic Addition
Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones addressed the reasoning behind this acquisition, emphasizing the need for improvement, particularly in red zone efficiency. "We needed to have improvement, especially in that red zone, needed to have improvement getting in that end zone with that running game," Jones stated. "This all bolsters that up. I’m really pleased with where we are right now at running back."
Cook’s addition comes at a crucial time, as the Cowboys' offense is already leading the NFL in scoring with an average of 29.9 points per game in 2023. However, their red zone efficiency sits at 56.3%, indicating room for improvement in converting scoring opportunities near the goal line.
Building Depth in the Backfield
The Cowboys currently have a roster of running backs that includes Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott, and Deuce Vaughn, along with fullback Hunter Luepke. With Cook joining the practice squad, Jones expressed optimism about the depth and potential contributions Cook can bring. "He’s initially on the practice squad, gives him a chance to get in here and learn the system," he noted. "We had hoped that as time went along in this offseason, we would have an opportunity to maybe look at a player of his stature if the right circumstances came along."
On the Sideline
Meanwhile, the team is also dealing with the challenge of an injury to All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury. However, Jones has made it clear that the team is not looking externally for reinforcements at the cornerback position. "Not at all," he said when asked about the possibility of seeking outside help.
Welcoming Cook
Cook's integration into the team has already begun, with a workout held for him earlier this week. "We had a workout for him. He’s in good shape. He’ll get a lot more work. He will learn the system as he goes, and he could really help us out this year," Jones remarked. This suggests that while Cook will start on the practice squad, there is potential for him to make significant contributions as he becomes more familiar with the Cowboys' playbook.
The acquisition also aligns with the Cowboys' broader strategy of maintaining a robust and dynamic backfield. Jones expressed confidence in Ezekiel Elliott’s role, adding, "We’re all excited about what Zeke can do for us."
Cook's recent shoulder surgery rehab during the 2024 offseason indicates he will be closely monitored to ensure he is in optimal condition to contribute effectively. The Cowboys' strategy appears to be focused on leveraging Cook’s experience and skill to enhance an already powerful offensive lineup.
As the Cowboys look ahead, the addition of a seasoned and proven player like Dalvin Cook could be a pivotal factor in their quest for dominance in the league. With the playoffs in sight, this move underscores the team's commitment to fine-tuning their roster for maximum impact.
