Tyus Jones Joins Phoenix Suns on One-Year Deal
In a move that could significantly bolster their backcourt, Tyus Jones has agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Phoenix Suns. The 28-year-old point guard brings a wealth of experience from his stints with multiple NBA teams, most recently the Washington Wizards.
Jones averaged a solid 12.0 points and 7.3 assists per game during the 2023-24 campaign with the Wizards, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively on the floor. Known for his playmaking skills and basketball IQ, he is expected to provide valuable depth and leadership to a Suns team loaded with star talent.
“The chance to play for the Phoenix Suns made the most sense on a lot of levels to me and my family—beginning with the way [governor] Mat Ishbia and the front office recruited me to how coach [Mike Budenholzer] showed me how I can significantly impact a team that has a real opportunity to challenge for an NBA title as their starting point guard,” Jones said.
The Suns, who already boast a star-studded lineup featuring Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, offered Jones a veteran's minimum salary. This demonstrates their strategic approach to filling out the roster with quality players while managing the salary cap effectively.
Jones has built a respectable career since entering the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015. He spent his first four seasons (2015-19) with the Timberwolves before moving on to the Memphis Grizzlies. His tenure with the Grizzlies was particularly notable; during the 2022 playoffs, he averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals over 12 games, showcasing his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
After his successful run with Memphis, Jones joined the Washington Wizards, where he continued to develop his game and prove his worth as a reliable point guard. His decision to join the Suns appears to be guided by both personal and professional considerations.
“My agent [Bradbury] walked me and my family through multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals at a number of different financial levels, but the Suns' opportunity is where I can best maximize my value for a return to free agency next year as well as give myself a chance to be part of what I think will be a special team and season,” Jones added.
The Suns are aiming to build on their recent successes and make a deep playoff run. With Jones in the mix, they add another veteran presence who can handle the ball, distribute effectively, and provide stability in the backcourt.
As the upcoming NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on how Jones integrates with his new teammates and the role he will play in Phoenix's quest for a championship. His experience and skill set perfectly complement the Suns' existing core, making this a mutually beneficial partnership with potential high rewards for both parties involved.
